Nabarangpur: Three persons of a family, including two women and a minor boy were killed in a land slide in Barandipara village under Jharigaon block of Nabarangpur district on Friday. Reports reaching here said three more persons were also injured in the incident.

The deceased have been identified as 15-year-old Chand Gouda and his two sister-in-laws. According to police sources, the incident occurred when Gouda and 10 other women were collecting red soil from a hillock near the village. A landslide was triggered while they were digging for soil.

“We didn’t understand what happened. There were two landslides and we could not see them coming,” said Jayamani Bhatra, one of the women who accompanied them.

Fire officials along with the locals recovered the dead bodies after digging the soil. The three injured persons were shifted to Jharigaon community health centre, out of which one has been shifted to the Nabarangpur district headquarters hospital as his condition deteriorated.

“Three persons have been admitted to the hospital. One of them was critical and we have shifted her to the headquarters hospital. The other two have been administered minor treatment and are now out of danger,” said Debashis Tripathy of Jharigaon Community health centre.

Police is currently investigating the matter.

“This is a case of accident. They were trying to dig soil for private use and there were no commercial exploitation and no contractors were involved. The victims were working there on their own will and risk,” said Nabarangpur SP, Sudhanshu Sekhar Mishra.
