Baripada: Students of MPC Autonomous College, Baripada, have expressed displeasure over vacant faculty member positions in the college. This has affected the completion of courses in the college, they said.

According to reports, there are three faculty members in English department as compared to sanctioned number of posts for nine lecturers. Similarly, one faculty member is there in Physics department against eight posts. In Computer Science, Zoology and Mathematics departments, there are no teachers.

More than 5,600 students are studying in the college in 23 departments. Though the college has sanctioned positions for 84 lecturers, only 25 are present on regular basis and nine are working ad-hoc.

Anushwa Satpathy, a student, said, "We suffer the most due to faculty shortage in different departments. Positions have been lying vacant in the college even after retirement of senior faculty members."

Satya Narayan Das, another student, said, "My hopes and expectations have been dashed after joining here as the college lacks adequate faculty members. In the Mathematics department, there are no regular lecturers."

Meanwhile, Dr Krutibas Sahu, Principal of MPC Autonomous College, accepted that low wage forces contractual lecturers to move elsewhere for better opportunities.

Echoing similar views, Pratap Keshari Sadangi, Secretary of the District Private College Lecturers' Association, said, "Contractual teachers are getting low wages which is not enough to sustain."
