Kendrapara: Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda on Friday inaugurated an overhead water tank project at Sansidha panchayat under Aul block. The water tank project which has been constructed at a cost of Rs 25 lakh, is the 16th such project from Panda's MPLAD fund that will cater to the needs of more than 10,000 people in the area.

Surprisingly, Aul block chairperson Jharana Das, vice-chairman Dipak Bhuyan and member Dhanranjan Bose had inaugurated the water tank project in absence of the MP yesterday.

Commenting on the matter, Panda said, "I have no objection as the basic purpose of such projects is to ensure that it fulfils the drinking water requirements of people. But as per rules, the project should have been inaugurated in MP's presence as it was built from MPLAD fund."

It was not for the first time that such attempts were made by local BJD leaders to hijack the water tank project built from MPLAD fund.

Earlier, another water tank project was forcefully inaugurated by the Marshaghai block chairperson Sitalata Parida on February 7. The block chairperson had stated that the local MLA had directed her to inaugurate the water tank in the absence of the MP.

Moreover, after Panda inaugurated the project yesterday in Marshaghai, some miscreants vandalised the plaque of the project, hours after the inauguration.

In his response such vandalism, Panda said, "It is now almost 3 to 4 years that a trend of ransacking plaques has crept in. I don't think that people will tolerate such acts of hooliganism and violence by BJD supporters."

Yesterday, former MLA of Aul, Pratap Deb had stated," As the water tank projects have been built from MPLAD funds, he (Baijayant) should inaugurate. But as the MP has been suspended from the party, workers and activists might not be accepting him for which such incidents could have happened."

Deb, however, clarified that people should not take law into their hands and it is totally unacceptable.
