Bhubaneswar: India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said the south-west monsoon will enter the Odisha coast on June 8.
“The onset of south-west monsoon will take place over Andaman and Nicobar Island in the next 3-4 days. From there, it will move towards the Kerala coast and gradually move towards north-east and hit the Odisha coast by June 8,” Director-in-Charge, Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Mamata Yadav, told OTV.
She further said a low pressure, formed over south-west Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean off the Sri Lanka coast yesterday, would intensify into a depression in the next 48 hours. Under its influence, rainfall is likely to increase in the coastal belt after May 18.
“Besides, a cyclonic circulation has formed at 1.5 km from the sea level over eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar while a trough line has also formed over eastern Uttar Pradesh stretching up to Tamil Nadu coast. Due to this synoptic system, rainfall activities will increase in some parts of Odisha in the next two days,” she informed.
She further said there is a possibility of isolated rain or thundershower at some places in Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Angul, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Balasore and Bhadrak districts this evening due to Kalabaisakhi (Norwester).
Asked about the weather conditions in the state today, Yadav said temperature in coastal Odisha would come down to below 35 degree Celsius today due to cloudy weather. Besides, there would be a marginal drop in temperature by 1-2 degrees in interior Odisha barring some places, which will record 42-43 degrees.
Meanwhile, rain and thundershower lashed some parts of west and south Odisha this afternoon. While Daringbadi in Kandhamal district received the highest rainfall at 40 mm, Koraput and Balangir recorded 8 mm and 8.6 mm respectively.
As per a Met release this evening, Balangir was the hottest place in the state today with 44.6 degree Celsius while temperature remained at 40 degrees and above in eight places. They were: Angul (40.7), Jharsuguda (42.5), Sambalpur (42.2), Sundergarh (43), Hirakud (42.1), Bhawanipatna (43), Titlagarh (43) and Sonepur (41.1).
Temperature in the state capital, which was 42.2 degree Celsius yesterday, came down to five degrees (37) today with relative humidity reaching 70 per cent.
