Bhubaneswar: The Southwest monsoon has covered at least ten districts of Odisha within the last 24 hours and is making further advances into other parts of the state, the regional meteorological department informed today.

The monsoon has advanced into most parts of Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Koraput, Gajapati, Rayagada districts while the effect of monsoon winds was also seen in some areas of Kandhamal, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Kalahandi districts.

Met sources further claimed that the conditions are becoming favourable for further advance of the SouthWest Monsoon into some parts of Odisha during the next 48 hours.

"If the temperature and weather conditions continue to remain favourable, a low pressure system developing over Northeast Bay of Bengal is likely to turn into a depression in the next 48 hours. The development could trigger rains in most parts of the state and might strengthen the monsoon in Odisha," said HR Biswas, the new director of Bhubaneswar  regional centre of IMD.

A few parts of Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Bolangir and Nuapada districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours due to effect of the low pressure while rain accompanied by lightning is also likely in some parts of Jharsuguda, Sundergarh and Sambalpur, Biswas added.
