Bhubaneswar: Congress MLA from Sundargarh, Jogesh Kumar Singh has urged the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry to set up the second regional campus of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) at Sundargarh.

In a letter to Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, Singh cited that Tribals constitute nearly 22 percent of the total population in Odisha but they are most neglected and backward in higher education.

“For the establishment of the regional campus, around 200 acres of surplus land of Government College, Sundargarh is available which would be sufficient for the project,” said Singh.

At present, the IGNTU, a central university has its main campus at Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh and regional campus at Imphal, Manipur.

Though a Central University has been established in Koraput District, it fails to attract students from Tribal districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, Singh wrote.

Once the regional campus of IGNTU is set up, all the courses offered by its parent university at Amarkantak will benefit the Tribal students at large, the MLA's letter read.

The Regional Campus will cater to thousands of Tribal students as well as others form neighbouring states of Jharkhand, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh, Singh wrote in his letter.
