Bhubaneswar:  Smart City Bhubaneswar today completed its 70th year of foundation with series of  gala events lined up to mark the occasion by government and other voluntary groups.

The celebrations, spanning for three days, kicked off to a colourful start with thousands of citizens participating in a special function organized by the State government.

Odisha Assembly Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat and several other dignitaries attended the function that was organized near the foundation plaque of Bhubaneswar installed in front of the State Assembly.

A colorful parade by students of different educational institutions was taken out from Rabindra Mandap to Jaydev Bhawan stretch.

Several important individuals who have contributed for the city’s growth were also felicitated on the occasion. Meanwhile , numerous cultural programmes and competitions by different organizations will be held throughout the day to mark the occasion.

 

 

It may be noted that the blue print for Bhubaneswar- the present capital Odisha was prepared by the renowned German architect and urban planner Otto Koenigsberger in 1946.

However, foundation stone for the city was laid by first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru on April 13, 1948.

The city today houses a population of 8 lakhs and has made the state proud by being  the first among all the ‘smart cities’ in India.

The “ Smart City Proposal” of Bhubaneswar that stood first in the smart city challenge of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, had proposed developments in various components comprising  integrated development of water supply , energy infrastructure, multi-level car parking, green parks and lakes development.

The proposal has also suggested  technological interventions in the field of traffic, transit, parking, emergency response , incidence management systems, common payment card, enterprise resource planning, e-governance and a command control centre for the city.
