Cuttack: Students of SCB Medical College and Hospital here sat on a dharna in protest against an alleged attack by relatives of a patient on a doctor late last night.

House surgeons and undergraduate students observed a cease work since wee hours today and demanded that the hospital authorities should take steps to ensure safety of doctors on duty at the hospital.

Dr Aman, who was beaten up by relatives of a patient, said, "Attendants of a lady patient from Mahanga, who were in an inebriated condition, engaged in an argument with me and then manhandled after I declared the patient dead."

This is not the first instance as similar type of cases have happened in the hospital in past, he added.

Another female doctor stated, "Despite repeated complaints lodged with the hospital authorities, no steps towards safety of doctors have been taken."

Prof Arun Choudhury, who was at the dharna site to pacify protesting students, said, "Healthcare services at the hospital have not completely stopped as critically ill patients are being given medical attention on priority basis."

“We have already told that stern action will be taken against the culprits as such acts are not acceptable. The doctors resorting to strike is not appropriate as patients will get severely affected,” said Health Minister Pratap Jena.

Meanwhile, local police have detained three persons on charges of manhandling the doctor.

In March, junior doctors of SCB had resorted to cease work after one of their colleagues was attacked by a patient's attendant.
