Kalahandi/Kandhamal: The last rites of martyred SOG Jawan Laxmikant Jani, who was killed in a Maoists’ ambush at Kanjalagu Ghat under Baliguda Sub-Division in Kandhamal district late on Sunday night, will be performed at his village Malgaon in Kalahandi district today.

A pall of gloom descended on the village after the mortal remains of Jani reached his homeland at around 4 am today. A guard of honour was given to Jani at his village.

Earlier on Monday, Jani had been given guard of honour at Phulbani Reserve Police field before his body was sent home.

According to Kandhamal SP Pinak Mishra, extremists had suddenly attacked the jawans while returning from combing operations on late Sunday night. An exchange of fire took place during which many SOG jawans sustained injuries.

Jani was martyred during the attack while 10 others were severely injured.

Home Additional Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy has said that operations are on in Kandhamal and Kalahandi and that the state government will give a fitting reply to the Maoists for this attack.

While the Odisha Havildar and Sepoy Mahasangh demanded Rs 1 crore ex gratia for the family of the martyred SOG jawan and a job to his kin in 15 days, Tripathy said the compensation will be given as per amended package.
