New Delhi: Highlighting that the largest number of cattle in the country is being smuggled from Odisha, Union minister of Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has sought CM Naveen Patnaik’s intervention in a case where a volunteer cow rescuer from Rayagada, Tirtha Kumar Sahu was arrested and thrashed by police and also denied medical treatment.
Citing that Sahu had been a victim of hostility from police and administration, Maneka in her letter to the CM said; “I had a talk with the Collector of Rayagada, who had him arrested and it seems that he was arrested for talking too loudly in front of the President’s secretary. The collector said he could not get him out of jail as he intended to teach him a lesson. Inside Raygada jail, Sahu was immediately attacked and injured on April 7, 2016. Again, I spoke to the Collector, who said it was probably Sahu’s fault, that he should have been killed and that he was not going to even have an inquiry into the matter. He is in need of urgent and proper medical treatment, which has been denied him so far.”
Maneka also highlighted the contribution of Sahu in cattle rescue and rehabilitation. “He has filed 180 cases in the High Court in 2015 against the Civil and Police administration of Odisha. Last July, Sahu was called by the President of India in response to the letters he and his associates from Odisha had written against the civil and police administration’s neglect/ involvement in cattle smuggling/slaughter,” noted the Union minister in her letter.
Providing the details of the thrashing inside the Collector’s office and jail, and also other hostile behavior towards the 22-year-old volunteer, Maneka has urged Naveen Patnaik to take up the matter.
The boy should be applauded for his courage and commitment, suggested Maneka in her letter.
