Kendrapara: A 28-year-old man, who took to facebook route to befriend a 19-year-old woman and later sexually assault her, was taken into custody today by Kendrapara rural police.

The accused Ramakant Behera of Basudebpur village in Bhadrak district is accused of physically abusing the victim from Chandol village in Kendrapara district after the former developed intimacy with the victim through facebook social network site.

The friendship had bloomed into full-fledged love affair. The accused, who worked in a private company in Bengaluru, had come all the way from his workplace to girl’s village and eloped with the girl under false promise of marriage.

Behera had consensual physical relation with girl for about a week in lodge in Bhadrak. The accused later ditched her refused to marry his facebook friend-turned-beloved.

The victim mustered the courage to take to task the accused by confiding the family members of the unsavoury episode. Later the victim’s family lodged a complaint with Kendrapara Sadar police.

To teach the wayward man a lesson, a trap was laid. The victim was asked by police to invite the accused to her to a designated spot of the native village. The victim, as instructed by police, told him for continuance of the affair without marriage plan. The accused youth was arrested as he had turned up to meet the victim.

Both the accused and the victim were medically examined. The accused confessed to the crime. He is being forwarded to court tomorrow, said Inspector Kendrapara Sadar Police station, Nilakanta Patra.
