Khurda: A baby elephant landed in trouble when it fell into a well accidentally after venturing into the human habitation at Manjaripatana near Nirakarpur in the district today.
The villagers spotted the elephant calf inside the well of Prabhakar Behera in the morning when it was trying to reach out of water body. A crowd rushed to spot to see the animal after neighbours raised an alarm.
A team from the forest and wildlife department was called to the spot which rescued the animal later with the help of local residents.
The forest officials have planned to hand over the animal to Nandankanan zoo authorities.
Elephants proceed towards human habitation after finding their habitat threatened and migratory routes disrupted as forests are cleared for various projects.
In a separate incident, a man was trampled to death by an elephant at Kaunriapal near Odapada in Dhenkanal district. The deceased, Akshya Mohanty was outside the village while the jumbo attacked him.
On the other hand, two poachers were arrested and tusks were seized from them by forest department officials in Banki of Sundergarh. The accused are Chandan Munda of Chhidakuda and Dinabandhu Munda of Sarasaposa. They had allegedly poached an elephant in Sarasoposa village recently and extracted the tusks.
