Balasore: Police on Sunday detained a person for allegedly duping students on the pretext of helping them to clear plus II examination in the district.

The accused Umakant Singh, a resident of Nilagiri area had allegedly taken Rs 20,000 each from over 40 students.

Singh posing as a teacher had approached the students and lured them to assist in clearing the examination by increasing their marks.

“I had given Rs 25,000 and we had come in contact with Umakant Singh through a common friend. He had informed he was a teacher with a premier college and assured us to help in clearing the examination,” said a student.

Another student stated that several other boys from the area had also fallen in his trap.

"When we approached Singh to return our money, he threatened us,” said another student.

Meanwhile, the duped examinees today caught hold of Singh at a bank and informed police who then took him into custody for further investigation.
