Angul: A youth was trampled to death by an elephant late last night in Barapadar village under Madhpur forest range in the district.

The deceased, identified as Sushil Behera, and his brother were keeping a vigil on crops in a thatched house in their farmland when an elephant rampaged into the paddy field and started damaging crops. It also attacked Sushil and mauled him to death in the farmland though Sushil’s brother managed to escape.

As soon as the news spread, tension erupted in the area and locals demanded adequate compensation for family members of the deceased.

Meanwhile, locals in Nilagiri area of Balasore district have had a harrowing time in past two days as elephants strayed from neighbouring Jharkhand into the Gopalpur forest and adjoining areas.

In Jadibali village, pachyderms destroyed crops and houses of villagers following which forest personnel launched operation to drive back the wild animals.
