Bhubaneswar: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Benerjee on Tuesday met ailing Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, who is currently undergoing treatment at a city-based private hospital while under arrest in the Rose Valley chit fund scam.

Banerjee, who arrived in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday evening on a three-day tour to the state, went straight from Biju Patnaik International Airport to Apollo Hospital here to meet Bandyopadhyay.

"Our MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay is unwell. I have come to see him," she told reporters here.

The Chief Minister said Bandyopadhay has broken down both physically and mentally. "He has lost 16-17 kilos. The doctors are very much worried about his health condition. He was crying. I have given him an exercise book and asked him to record his pain there."

She claimed that Bandypadhyay has never committed any wrong.

Bandyopadhyay, a four time Lok Sabha member and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the Manmohan Singh cabinet between 2011 and 2012, has been under arrest since January 3, when he was taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for his alleged links with the Rose Valley scam.

Another Trinamool MP Tapas Pal, also arrested by the CBI in the chit fund scam, is also admitted in the same hospital.

Banerjee also said that she would meet Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik if time permits.

"I also wish to visit Puri to pay obeisance to Lord Jagannath," she added.

The West Bengal Chief Minister will visit Srimandir on Wednesday morning.
