Keonjhar/Koraput: In what can be a shame for the state as much as the much hyped Beti Bachao campaign of Modi, cases of abandonment of girl children are on the rise. This morning, two more cases have come in from Keonjhar and Koraput districts where two new born girls were found abandoned. While one was located near a drain in Hariharpur village under Saharapada block of Keonjhar district, the other was from Girliguda village of Pottangi in Koraput district.

According to sources, a local villager passing by the drain heard the cries of the baby girl today morning, and immediately informed Child Helpline officers and Asha workers.

The Asha worker rescued the baby girl and then took her to the Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital.

The girl was found to be underweight and sick after a medical examination was conducted. She was later shifted to Cuttack SCB medical college and hospital as her condition worsened. She has been kept in the Special New-born Care Unit (SNCU), sources added.

"Locals tried to search for her parents for some time and then informed us. We hope police is able to trace her parents," said the Asha worker.

In another incident, a newborn girl which was half buried on the foot of a hill in Girliguda village in Koraput district was rescued alive by an old woman today.

Sources said, the woman stopped by the hill after hearing the cries of the baby that was buried till her neck in the soil. She immediately rescued the baby, took to her house and informed Sarpanch of the village.

Subsequently, the baby was rushed to the Pattangi medical in a 102 ambulance and had to be shifted to Pottangi medical in a critical condition.

After preliminary treatment, the baby’s health condition has improved, informed the Asha worker.
