Bhubaneswar: Veteran lyricist and music composer Gurukrushna Goswami passed away due to old age-related illness at his Shivajinagar residence in Cuttack on Sunday. He was 84.
Born in 1934 near Baripada, Goswami has over 1600 folk, devotional and modern songs to his credit.
Being associated with Odia music industry for over six decades, Goswami was a script writer, lyricist and music director. He is popular for evergreen songs like Mu Je Janena Kaha Bata, E Banara Chhayi and Phulei Rani Sajaphula.
Goswami has played the role of a lyricist for nearly 30 Odia movies, including Maa (1958) to Ranabhumi (1994).
The veteran singer was honoured with the Best Lyricist Award in 1996, Bhaktakabi Salbeg Award and Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the year 2000.
The entire cine industry was saddened by the demise of the lyricist. Odia Gitikabi Samaj general secretary Manoj Patnaik said, "An era of Odia Gitikabi came to an end today with the demise of Goswami. The journey which began in 1955 suddenly ended today. This is a great loss for the Odia music industry."
Singer Debasis Mohapatra said, "Many noted singers have lent their voice for Goswami's songs such as 'Sei Chuna Chuna Taraphule’ by Lata Mangeshkar, Tumaku Paruni Ta Bhuli by Mohd Rafi and 'Antare Kande Bahare Hanse' by Pranab Patnaik. His lyrics have always been unique and incomparable."
