Nayagarh: Locals of Kasanda village in Nayagarh district lynched two bank robbers as they tried to flee after committing robbery in the Canara Bank this afternoon.

According to reports, three robbers arrived at the Canara Bank’s branch office at Kasanda village in Ranpur block in a bike. After entering into the bank, they attacked the peon Purna Chandra Jena with sharp weapons and looted cash worth Rs 3 lakh after threatening the bank staff.

Following information, the villagers rushed to the spot. Seeing them, the three dacoits tried to flee in the bike. But they were overpowered by the villagers who severely thrashed them resulting in the death of a robber while the two others were seriously injured.

Soon after the incident, a team of Ranpur police rushed to the spot and rushed the two grievously injured robbers to the hospital where one of them succumbed to his injuries. As the condition of the other robber became critical, he was shifted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Police later seized Rs 3 lakh cash and a live country bomb from the robbers.

Talking to media persons, a youth of Kasanda village said as the three bank robbers tried to flee, the villagers pelted boulders at their bike. “As the boulder hit the bike, it went out of control and the three robbers fell down. The villagers later severely thrashed the trio and killed one of them on the spot. The two others were shifted to a nearby government hospital where another robber died. Another robber was shifted to Capital Hospital as his condition became critical,” he added.

“The identity of the three robbers is yet to be identified. Police has begun investigation on the basis of the CCTV footage installed in the bank,” Nayagarh SP Kanwar Vishal Singh told media persons.
