Bhubaneswar: In a series of tragic incidents, at least 16 people were killed and nine others got injured after being struck by lightning in different parts of Odisha today, taking the death toll to 34 in two days.
As per reports, maximum number of four deaths was reported from Cuttack district, while there were three casualties in Sambalpur district, two in Bhubaneswar and one each in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Puri and Deogarh district.

Of the four deaths reported from Cuttack district, three persons were killed in Kadalibada, Dourada and Manipur village under Athagarh block when they were working in a field, while one person was killed and his wife got injured in Tentulapura village under Nischintapur block. As many as eight students of the Rasrasikapur UGME School in Athagarh were injured, two of them critically, when lightning struck their school building.

In another incident, lightning claimed life of a 14-year-old in Jhinkijhari village in Khurda. Similarly, a woman was killed in Jayapurpatna village near Dhauli and one Nibas Swain from Daspur village under Andharua panchayat on the outskirts of the capital city died in lightning.

In Sambalpur district, lightning claimed the lives of three persons in Jagannathprasad, Kutasingha and Balasingha in Naktideul area.

One death each was reported from Arapata village under Barsahi block in Mayurbhanj and Astaranga village in Puri district.

In Deogarh district, a teacher of Jualibhanga School near Tainsar of Deogarh district was killed in lightning strike.

Earlier today, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of 18 persons killed in lightning in various parts of the state on Sunday.
