Lawyers raise voice against BCI chairman's support to law panel recommendations

Bhubaneswar: Bar Council of India (BCI) chairman Manan Mishra on Saturday faced the wrath of lawyers for supporting the recommendations of Law Commission of India (LCI) on Advocates' (Amendment) Bill, 2017.

Tension prevailed at the National Conference organised to discuss the proposed Advocates’ (Amendment) Bill 2017 with lawyers vehemently opposing Mishra here at Bhubaneswar on Saturday.

Trouble erupted soon after Mishra stood to deliver his speech in support of the recommendations of the Law Commission of India regarding fresh amendments to the Advocates’ Act 1961.

“Bar Council of India will never allow any kind of hooliganism,”said Mishra.

Odisha State Bar Council and other Bar Associations’ across the country are against the Advocates’ (Amendment) Bill, 2017 as the members claim that it would destroy the independence and autonomy of the Indian Bar completely.

As per the recommendations proposed by the Law Commission of India (LCI) to Government, stringent action has been proposed against lawyers for misconduct and resorting to strikes.

Over 300 lawyers and other delegates from 17 states had come to participate in the National Conference organised by Odisha State Bar Council.

Yesterday, the Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had cleared the air that the government would not take any decision on implementing the commission’s report without holding consultations with the legal fraternity.
