Koraput:  A day after the death of Kunduli gang rape victim, protests have gained momentum across Odisha with several political parties staging demonstrations on Tuesday seeking justice for the girl.

Tension ran high in Koraput after locals took away the body of the girl from hospital without allowing the officials to conduct a post mortem.

Later, the locals backed by senior leaders of Congress including Pradip Majhi blocked NH-26 by placing the body of the girl and staging demonstration.

The party has demanded for action against those involved in the gang rape and police officials who failed to provide justice to the girl.

"The survivor had earlier claimed that there was threat to her life. The girl was murdered and forced to commit suicide," said Congress leader Tara Prasad Bahinipati.

Later the family members of the girl took her body to the crematorium where autopsy was conducted in presence of the Tehsildar, police and afterwards her last rites were performed.

The girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself inside her house on Monday. Though the family rushed her to the hospital, she was declared brought dead by the doctors.

The death of the girl has kicked off a political storm with major political parties targeting the State government on the issue.

The BJP activists while  demonstrating in Bhubaneswar clashed with police after they tried to gherao Naveen Nivas, the official residence of Chief Minister.

Police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the BJP workers after they breached the security cordon near Sishu Bhawan chhak.
