Koraput: 4 held for persecuting young couple

Koraput: Four persons have been arrested by police for publicly humiliating a young couple which subsequently led to suicide attempt by both, leaving the young boy dead in Routaput village of Koraput.

According to sources, the arrested persons have been identified as the father, brother and two uncles of the girl. The accused were arrested by Koraput Sadar police.

It may be mentioned that the boy and the girl who were in love fled the village on March 19, as their families were against the relationship over caste and age differences. However, they returned to the village three days later as husband and wife.

Upon their return, the girl’s family thrashed them mercilessly in front of the whole village and insulted them. Not able to bear the torture and humiliation, the couple attempted suicide on March 25 by hanging themselves from the roof of their thatched house. The girl was saved as the rope she used snapped but the boy died.
