Killer bear bludgeoned to death by irate locals

Nabarangpur: A bear which killed three persons in Singadi jungle in Chandahandi block in Nabarangpur yesterday was bludgeoned to death by irate locals today.

Three people identified as Lambodhar Majhi, Nakul Majhi and his wife Turturi Majhi were attacked by the said bear while they had gone into the jungle to fetch leafy vegetables. Two other persons were also seriously injured by the bear.

In a bid to rein in the killer bear, a trap was laid and a tranquilizer team deployed at the spot by forest department officials today. While Police and Forest department officials recovered the dead body of Lambodhar, efforts were on to trace the bodies of other two persons when the bear suddenly emerged in front of the locals, who attacked the bear with stones and sticks in panic. Sources alleged that though Police and forest department officials were present on the spot, no efforts were made to save the bear.

“While we have arranged a tranquilizer team and our efforts are on to trace the other two persons, a mob of around 1000 irate locals beat the bear to death,” said Umerkote SDPO Gopinath Manipatra.
