Sonepur: Panic gripped Majhimunda village of Rengali block in the district after five persons died and eight others were down with kidney disease.

Sources said people of Majhimunda village are in a state of fear as the disease is spreading with each passing day.

Surprisingly, nobody in the health department has any idea about the real cause behind the disease.

Villagers claimed that despite their complaint, the district administration is paying no heed to their plight.

The Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) had said all assistance would be provided to those who are down with the disease but no help has come, they grumbled.

The real cause behind the disease is yet to be known but the water quality of the locality is under scrutiny based on the suspicion that it could be the reason.

Most people in the village have stopped using water from tube wells for drinking fearing it could lead to the disease.

When asked what steps the district administration is taking to curb the menace, the CDMO said a medical team will be sent to village to find out the actual reason behind the incident.

."We will provide financial assistance to people after having a discussion with the district collector," he said.
