Phulbani: An ITI lecturer and four others were arrested by police on charges of gambling at the residence of the former in Master Pada under Phulbani police limits in Kandhamal district on Thursday.

Acting on a tip off, police raided the house of the lecturer and seized Rs 28,000 from the five.

The other arrested persons were identified as Accountant of Kotagarh Tehsil office Pabitra Mohapatra, retired government employee Sudhir Behera and two businessmen Sanjib Kumar Mohanty and Dukhisankhali Sahani.

The five accused will be forwarded to court today.

Gambling on Kumar Purnima is rampant in several parts of the State with people getting involved in large numbers. Mostly residential areas turn into gambling dens. But police is trying to keep a check on such illegal activities, said a police official.
