Puri: Pilgrim town Puri is all set to become a sports hub as the Union Sports Ministry has approved the project to set up an international level stadium here with ultramodern facilities.

The stadium will be set up with an estimate of around Rs 7.5 crore under the Centre's flagship Rajeev Gandhi Khel Abhiyan.

The district administration has confirmed to provide the necessary land allotment near Talabania. The tender works will start after the detailed project report (DPR) is prepared, Puri Collector said.

The stadium will include all necessary infrastructure for track and field, indoor ground for badminton, table tennis, ultra modern gym and fitness training facilities, gallery and lodging facilities for trainers, players.

At present there is only a single indoor stadium in the city which caters to need of sports lovers but it has been unable to meet the requirement for multifarious outdoor sports events of state and national level. Similarly, even though there is abundant sporting talent here, players are unable to get better platform and exposure because of lack of top quality training facilities.
