Inter-state dacoit injured in encounter

Phulbani: Inter-state dacoit Birendra Nayak sustained bullet injuries on his leg in a police encounter on Daringbadi-Gajalbadi road here on Saturday night.

Acting on a tip off, a police team raided the Daringbadi-Gajalbadi area where Nayak and his two associates were allegedly hatching a plan to commit a crime in the area.

When the police tried to nab them, Nayak opened fire at the team. In reply, the police fired back at Nayak inflicting bullet injuries on his left leg, police sources said. A seriously injured Nayak was first admitted to Sorada hospital and later shifted to Berhampur hospital, the sources added.

Two associates of Nayak, however, managed to escape from the spot during the encounter.

The police also seized a 9 mm pistol, three rounds of live bullets, two bikes and Rs 7,000 in cash from Nayak's possession.
