Bhubaneswar: Inter-state ATM looters’ gang leader Ajay Choudhury was arrested in Uttarakhand by the Commissionerate Police for looting more than Rs 48 lakh from five ATM machines in Puri, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

Informing newsmen about the arrest at the DGP camp office in Bhubaneswar, Director General of Police (DGP) KB Singh said teams of the Commissionerate Police are undertaking raids at different parts of the country to arrest the other members of the ATM looters’ gang.

The police have seized one Apple laptop, hard disk and three mobiles from the possession of Ajay Choudhury, a resident of Rudrapur in Uttarakhand.

The DGP added Ajay’s six bank accounts having Rs 8 lakh deposits and one bank locker were also freezed by the Commissionerate Police.

Notably, Ajay was jailed in 2014 in an ATM skimming case. Besides, he was allegedly involved in a similar kind of offence in Lucknow in 2016.

Ajay had also tried to loot from two ATM machines in Cuttack and one in Old Town area in Bhubaneswar, but was unsuccessful, said the DGP at the press meet where Police Commissioner YB Khurania and Cuttack DCP were present.

Singh also said the robbers didn't use mobile phones while committing the crime.

"The thieves, in this case, didn't use mobile phones as they were communicating through an app. The culprits were using a Chinese malware for the purpose. They first install it into the system through the USB port and then they reboot it," the DGP added.
