Sambalpur: The infant that was rescued by bystanders from a canal in Sambalpur today died while undergoing treatment at hospital.

Found floating in a basket, the baby was rescued and admitted to the Sadar Hospital here.

The infant was receiving treatment at the SNCU.

‘The treatment was going on fine. But there was excessive bleeding due to internal haemorrhage. Around 4:45 PM the child died,” said the medical officer.

Earlier during the day, the baby was found floating in a basket and after being informed, the Ainthapalli Police reached at the spot and helped the locals take him to the hospital.

“We rescued the baby and called the police. Then we brought the baby to the hospital in the police van,” said rescuer Jogesh Kumar Bhoi.

While the police are investigating the matter, the identity of the infant’s parent and the motive behind the abandonment is yet to be established.
