Kalahandi: Hundreds of farmers took to streets and staged a demonstration protesting disruption of water supply to as many as 15 gram panchayats relying on Golamunda distributary canal of Indravati Irrigation project here today.

Due to protests vehicular communication has been disrupted on Dharmagarh-Golamunda-Sinapali road.

As many as 15 GPs including Dharamgarh, Khairapadar, Brahmanlundia, Golamunda relying on left canal of Kusumukhunti division of the irrigation project have suffered due to the disruption of water supply.

A 15-ft wide breach in left canal was caused by a dislocation of a two meter-wide stone from the canal siphon leading to the drastic reduction of water supply to Golamunda distributary canal and inundation of more than 30 acre of agricultural land and sand deposit over 5 acre of land and widespread crop loss.

A fortnight ago a similar breach also led to a deluge affecting as many as five villages, but the administration is yet to take any concrete steps to solve the regular breakage of the canal.
