Khurda: In a sensational incident that epitomises the moral degeneration of our society, a woman has charged her in-laws and husband for blackmailing her by shooting intimate moments using a close circuit television camera (CCTV) in her bedroom. Cuttack-based doctor Rebatikanta Das, his wife and his son Gaurav have been served notices by police after the victim made the allegation.

According to Niraja Nalini Mohanty, the victim, she was being subjected to physical and mental harassment by her in-laws for dowry. Her in-laws, who happen to be doctors, had been demanding Rs 35 lakh as dowry.

However, things got out of her hands when she spotted a CCTV camera in her bedroom. When she inquired about its presence inside her room, she was attacked and threatened for life by her in-laws. On being subjected to such torture, Niraja decided to leave her in-laws place just 18 days after her marriage.

Niraja had filed a case with Khorda police on May 31. However, her in-laws and husband threatened to post the CCTV footage of her intimate moments on social media in case she told the police or anyone else about the matter.

“Do in-laws put up CCTV cameras inside their daughter-in-law’s bedroom? What was their intention? I was threatened to be killed if I opened my mouth about the incident. Moreover, they also threatened to post the CCTV footage of by bedroom on social media,” said Niraja.

After the threat of blackmail, Niraja lodged a fresh case with Khurda police today based on which notices were served to the doctor couple and their son.

“We are investigating the case and notices have been served to the accused. We are trying to investigate the case from all possible angles,” said IIC of Khurda Town Police Station Ranjit Kumar Sahoo.

“We have installed CCTV cameras across the house following a theft two years ago. Following our son's marriage, we had sealed their room,” said Niraja’s father in law Rebatikanta Das.

Notably, Niraja, who hails from Haldiagarh in Khurda, married Gaurav on November 27, 2015.
