Hirakud opens one sluice gate to release excess water

Sambalpur: The Hirakud Dam authorities today opened one sluice gate to release excess water from the reservoir into the basin due to increase in inflow following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas.

Chief Engineer of Hirakud Dam Hara Mohan Pradhan had earlier informed that the gate will be opened on Sunday 9 pm. However, it was opened at 2.20 am.

According to sources, more gates of the dam may be opened in future to maintain water level. The decision will be taken based on the quantity of rainfall in the upstream.

Meanwhile, the water level in the reservoir stands at 629.79 ft and it is being constantly monitored.
