Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, a student of Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital in Bhubaneswar was found hanging inside his hostel room here Saturday night.

The deceased has been identified as Nihar Ranjan Rout, a resident of Soro in Balasore district who was pursuing his 3rd year in MBBS at the college.

The family members rushed to the hostel after getting information from Nihar’s friends, only to see the body of their ward hanging in his room.

Alleging that Nihar has been murdered, the family members have lodged a complaint against the college authority at the Mancheswar police station claiming that their ward was being pressurised by the college to pay money to compensate for the poor marks he had obtained in the recently concluded exams.

"We had received a letter from the college to pay money. They used to torture Nihar and also threatened him that they would not allow him to appear in the examination,' alleged Nihar's uncle.

However, the college authorities have refuted the allegations levelled by Nihar’s family. At a presser, Hi-tech Medical College and Hospital CEO Bhisma Rath stated, "Poor results and attendance could be the possible reasons behind Nihar Ranjan Rout committing suicide. This apart, college fees amounting to Rs 8 lakh was pending against him and we had informed his family about this. It might be due to the pressure of the family that he took such a step."

Meanwhile, police have recovered the body and sent it for post mortem while further investigation in connection with the incident is on, sources added.

This is not the first instance of such a case in the Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital. Earlier this month, a third year girl student of BSc. Nursing had attempted suicide by jumping off the three-storey hostel building of the college following which her family members lodged a police complaint at Mancheswar police station blaming the college authorities for the suicide attempt.
