Bhubaneswar: Having already extended school holidays till April 26, the Odisha government today announced summer vacation from tomorrow after IMD predicted temperature would hover around 42 degree Celsius at many places in the coming few days.
"As per the prediction of weather department, the mercury will hover around 42 degree Celsius at almost all places in the State. In view of the severe heat wave conditions, the State government has decided to declare the summer vacation from April 26. The schools will reopen after Raja festival as usual", Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradipta Mohapatra said.
However, the losses in terms of study days incurred due to the early announcement of holidays will be compensated through extra classes after Raja, he said. He said there are no obstacles in the conduct of examinations. "The school can conduct the test in the morning and evening," Mohapatra pointed out.
The government had first declared school holidays till April 20 and later extended it till 26 when the heat wave conditions showed no sign of relenting.
Notably, most of the cities in the State experienced temperature of around 45 degree C yesterday with Titilagarh becoming hottest in the country at 48.5 degree C.
Though the IMD has predicted thunderstorm on April 26 and 27, it has made it clear that there is little chance of a major fall in the mercury level in the coming days.
As per a Met release , apart from Titlagarh, mercury shot up to 40 degree Celsius above in 16 places in the state on Sunday.
Other places which recorded 40 degrees and above are Balasore (41.2), Chandbali (41.7), Cuttack (40.8), Bhubaneswar (41.8), Angul (44.1), Baripada (42.4), Jharsuguda (42.9), Keonjhar (41.5), Sambalpur (44), Sundergarh (44) Hirakud (43.9), Talcher (44.8), Bhawanipatna (45), Balangir (44.5), Sonepur (46.1) and Dhenkanal (43.6)
Talking to OTV, Director, Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu said though there is a possibility of kalabaisakhi (Norwester) in some parts of the coastal belts on April 26 and 27, there will be no significant change in the weather condition till May 3.
Meanwhile, reports on death of 88 persons due sun-stroke have been received from different sources in the state of which death in four cases has been confirmed to be due to sunstroke and in 28 cases, the death has occurred due to other reasons while the remaining 56 cases are under enquiry, a release by the office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) said.
