Bhubaneswar: Denizens of the Twin City heaved a sigh of relief from the scorching heat when hailstorm lashed many parts of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack at around 1.30 pm on Friday.

Though the heat was intense in Bhubaneswar till 1 pm, an overcast sky followed by a strong breeze culminated in a sharp downpour cooling the atmosphere.

Most areas in Cuttack also experienced drizzle.

People were seen jumping on the roads and enjoying the thrill of the rain after experiencing a humid and hot climate till 1 pm.

Though coastal parts of Odisha experienced minor relief from heat due to hailstorms, Western and interior parts of Odisha continued to reel under heat wave.

Still as many as 16 places across Odisha recorded temperatures above 40 degrees. Angul was the hottest place in Odisha with 43.7 degree celsius.

Other places which recorded 40 degrees and above are Balasore (42), Chandbali (42.8), Cuttack (42), Bhubaneswar (43.5), Baripada (43.6), Jharsuguda (42.5), Keonjhar (41.3), Sambalpur (42.6), Sundergarh (42), Hirakud (42.7), Talcher (43.5), Bhawanipatna (43.5), Phulbani (40.2), Titlagarh (42) and Sonepur (40.8).
