Cuttack: Celebrating the  140th birth anniversary of Utkalmani Pandit Gopbandhu Das and commemorating the 75th year of Mahatma Gandhi’s concept of Gram Swaraj or village self-rule, Odia daily “The Samaja” initiated its annual Gopabandhu Jyoti Yatra from Gopbandhu Bhawan at Buxi Bazar, Cuttack.

The “Jyoti” was brought from Utkalmani’s birthplace, Suando in Puri district in the morning and the yatra was flagged off from Samaja office in the evening in presence of Sashibhushan Behera, Minister of Finance and Excice, Government of Odisha and Achyuta Samant, founder, KIIT and KISS.

The journey of the jyoti that started on the birth anniversary of Pandit Gopbanadhu will conclude in the state capital on November 10 after travelling all 30 districts of Odisha. The Sarpanchs and Gram Panchayats from different districts will be felicitated during this journey for their immense contribution towards complete development of rural Odisha.

Speaking to odishatv.in, printer and publisher of The Samaja Niranjan Rath said, “This is the fifth year of “Gopabandhu Jyoti Yatra”. The aim behind this yatra is to connect the general public to legends with high moral value. Here we spread Gopabandhu’s ideas and his dedication towards the people. This yatra will travel the entire state."

Starting from Samaja office at Buxi Bazar, this yatra left for Nayagarh after touching important places of the city like Stewart Science College, Shailabala Women’s College, Chandi Chhak, Barabati Stadium and Gadagadia Ghat. Many school students, scouts & guides, young sports persons of the city also joined the yatra.
