New Delhi: The Supreme Court today granted conditional bail to Bittihotra Mohanty, son ex-DGP BB Mohanty, in the German young woman rape case.

Hearing a bail plea moved by Bitti, who is at present lodged in the Jaipur Central jail, the apex court released the ex-DGP son on a Rs 2.5 lakh surety and ordered him for monthly appearance at the Cantonment police station during the bail period. Besides, Bitti was asked by the Supreme Court to surrender his passport if he have any.

Sarthak Nayak, Bitti’s counsel, told newsmen, "The apex court granted the bail to Bitti after listening to the arguments from both the sides for a long time. Though the Rajasthan State government vehemently opposed Bitti's bail plea, the apex court was of the view justice and proportionate of the case demand that the applicant must be released on a bail."

Notably, Bitti Mohanty, the son of former Home Guard and Fire Services DGP Bidya Bhushan Mohanty, was arrested for raping the German woman at a hotel in Alwar in March 2006.

After his conviction, Bitti had failed to return to the Jaipur central jail in November 2006 when a parole for 15 days was granted to visit his ailing mother. But he jumped the parole and did not turn up on December 4, 2006.

Later Bitti was arrested by the Kerala police on March 2013 when he was posing as a probationary officer in the State Bank of Travancore.
