Berhampur: Dreaded criminal Mitu alias Bijay Moharana has sustained critical injuries in a retaliatory firing by the district police in Hinjli area of Ganjam district late last night and is undergoing treatment at the MKCG hospital in Berhampur amid tight security.

Officials of the Hinjli and Sheragada police stations, who were frisking vehicles on Burupada-Marudi road after receiving a tip-off, tried to stop Mitu on a motorcycle along with an associate at around 2 am. But instead of halting at the check point, Mitu opened fire at the police personnel following which the cops retaliated.

With bullet injuries in the left leg because of the police firing, Mitu was rushed to the Hinjli hospital and later shifted to the Orthopaedic department of the MKCG Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

In the scuffle, Mitu's associate Mrutyunjaya Rout managed to escape.

Constable Subala Pradhan and the Inspector-In-Charge of the Sheragada police station have sustained minor injuries during the exchange of fire with Mitu.

Pistol, two live bullets and the motorcycle were seized from the possession of injured Mitu, who was wanted in several criminal cases including murder and loot.
