Fusion between art & social message makes my art touch hearts: Sudarsan Pattnaik

Bhubaneswar: ‘Art with a social message’ delights art aficionados the most and this is what differentiates Indian sand art from other artists  around the world, said sand sculptor Sudarsan Pattnaik in a freewheeling chat with odishatv.in on Thursday. Pattnaik will be participating in the 10^th Moscow sand art championship 2017 from April 22 to April 28.

The theme of the competition this year is ‘The World Around Us’.

“Spectators usually appreciate an art form which gives them newness as well as sends out some message of social significance,” Sudarsan stated thoughtfully. His sand art on ‘Gandhi on World Peace’ at the Moscow world championship last year fetched him the Gold medal among contestants from many countries.

The sand art created by the Indian sculptors have distinct designs which make them stand out, Sudarsan remarked.

Asked on whether he has thought of any concept that he would be translating into sand art at the forthcoming event, Sudarsan said his busy schedule has kept him away from thinking about the event so early.

On whether he will be using colours, he said in world championships, colours are a strict no. But there might be a change in rules, as the decision is taken by the organising committee, the Padma Shri awardee further stated.

“Every art form should have some newness as audience get bored if they find repetitions,” Sudarsan, who holds the Guinness World Record for creating the World's Tallest sand castle at the Puri beach this February, asserted.

The artist also teaches the nitty-gritty of sand art making at his organisation - the ‘Sudarsan Sand Art Institute’.
