Cuttack: Thanks to an alert friend and swift action by police, an engineering student in Cuttack was rescued before falling prey to the Blue Whale game’s ‘death trap’ on Tuesday.
A special team of Markatnagar police traced the victim, who reportedly had completed 10 tasks in the ‘suicide’ game, after one of his friends reported the matter and sought help from Odisha Police and Crime Branch on social media via Twitter.
According to sources, the student from Keonjhar was pursuing engineering from a city-based engineering college and his custody has been handed over to family members who have been asked to maintain ‘strict vigil.’
The identity of the student has been kept secret by police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Akhileswar Singh revealed that based on an SOS tweet reportedly from one of the friends of the victim last night, steps were taken to trace and rescue the student.
The matter came to light after the victim on his Facebook post had claimed to have completed few tasks under Blue Whale Challenge. However, it was one of his friends who tipped police about the matter and sought assistance from senior police officials on Twitter.
“After getting instructions from the Police Commissioner, we swung into action and a special team traced the student who had already completed few stages in the Blue Whale game,” said Singh.
