Puri: A former woman councillor was shot at by four bike-borne miscreants near Gokha Sahi under Baseli Sahi police limits here on Saturday.

The injured woman was identified as Satyabhama Behera, former councillor of Gokha Sahi.

As per sources, the bike-borne miscreants fired eight round of bullets at her before fleeing from the spot. Satyabhama sustained injuries on her leg.

Critical, she was rushed to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where she is undergoing treatment.

Past enmity or any land related dispute is believed to be the reason behind the incident.

"Our investigation is on. We will nab the culprits soon," said a police official.

Rising gun violence has become a cause of concern in the State. In February only, three such incidents were reported.

On February 6, a Bolero driver was critically injured after being shot at by some unknown miscreants near Panikoili SP office in Jajpur. The incident took place when the driver was on the way to Cuttack SCB Medical College and Hospital from Bhadrak carrying a patient. Three miscreants, in a Tata Safari, reportedly intercepted him near the SP office and opened fire.

Similarly, a youth was shot at by unidentified miscreants near Telangapentha on Cuttack-Bhubaneswar road on February 7. The injured person was on way to Cuttack when suddenly two bike-borne miscreants intercepted and fired at him.

In another such incident, two bike-borne miscreants shot at a man and his wife near Tilpada under Bairi police limits of Jajpur district on February 19 when the couple resisted the duo’s attempt to rob them.
