Brahmagiri (Puri): A special team of Forest staff of Brahmagiri Wildlife Range recovered four dead migratory birds and a live migratory bird during a raid on Ghatukuli village near Chilika lake in the wee hours today.

Acting on a tip-off, the team raided the outskirts area of the village and recovered the five winged guests. However, the poachers managed to flee the area.

Talking to media persons, Brahmagiri Range Officer Sahaji Charan Biswal said the team raided the village at about 4 AM and recovered five migratory birds of which four are Northern Shoveler and one is Northern Pintail.

He said it was not possible to catch the poachers who ran away along the lake shore which is about 2-3 km from the main road.

“Efforts are on to arrest these poachers,” he added.

Asked about the process of catching these winged guests, Biswal said the poachers usually catch these birds either by laying rope traps or using poison in their food.

To a question about the action taken against the poachers by the Forest department for killing eight migratory birds in this village some days ago, he said he is yet to receive the post mortem report. “I can say about the nature of death of these eight birds only after receiving the post mortem report,” he pointed out.
