Bargarh: With resentment brewing over crop loss due to pest attacks, farmers in Bargarh district joined hands to support the family members of deceased Brunda Sahu who had committed suicide on November 1.

A delegation of local farmers from Pradhanpalli under Bheden block has provided some monetary assistance to the family of the deceased.

“From political leaders to district administration officials, all had visited the deceased farmer’s family. But so far, no compensation or any assistance has been provided. Hence, we decided to lend our helping hand to them,” said a farmer from Pradhanpali, Kirtichandra Pradhan.

Earlier, Nabanirman Krusak Sangathan (NKS) had demanded an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for family members of deceased Brunda Sahu who had allegedly committed suicide over crop loss due to pests after setting his maize crops on fire.

Several farmers’ group in Odisha are now demanding that the state government should immediately provide compensation and other facilities to farmers of drought and pest affected districts.
