Bhubaneswar: Activists of the Navnirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS), a farmers' organisation, took to the streets today and staged a demonstration here at the Master Canteen Square protesting the death of five farmers in the Mandasaur district of Madhya Pradesh.

The activists marched from Master Canteen to Lower PMG here shouting slogans against the Central government and holding placards.

Later on a memorandum was submitted to President Pranab Mukherjee through Odisha Governor SC Jamir.

“The problems of the farmers could be resolved by the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report and we want PM Narendra Modi to intervene and clear the debts of farmers across the country,” NKS State Convener Akshay Kumar said.

Members of the CPI(M) and SUCI also staged dharna at the PMG square protesting the incident.

Earlier on Tuesday, farmers in Mandsaur had staged a protest demanding better prices for their crops and loan waiver.

The farmers resorted to violence, pelting stones at the police. In retaliation, police opened fire at the farmers, killing five on the spot.
