Bhubaneswar: The BJP on Thursday demanded resignation of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment Minister Pradeep Maharathy over the unabated farmer suicides in the state.

The saffron party alleged that the minister is not properly discharging his duties and urged the Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik to relieve Maharathy from his post.

Addressing a press conference here, BJP spokesperson Sajjan Sharma said, “The minister did not meet the family members of farmers who have committed suicide. Why are they blaming the District Collector? Again the District Collector is shifting it to the Tehsildar or the Assistant Agriculture Officer. They are even blaming family members of the deceased farmer.”

“One who is unable to take up his responsibilities why should he be a burden on the people of Odisha? Chief Minister should act immediately and relieve him from his responsibility,” urged Sharma.
