Bhubaneswar: A farmer was alleged to have committed suicide in Ganjam unable to bear loan burden. The deceased, identified as T Bulu Reddy of Chikarada village under Randa Panchayat in Golanthara block of the district, had taken a loan of Rs one lakh for farming and Rs 1.5 lakh for treatment of his son.

According to sources, untimely rain destroyed his tomato and chili pepper crops. He consumed poison on Friday night under the loan burden as he was not in a condition to pay it back.

Reddy breathed his last yesterday night while undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.

Kanisi Tehsildar Lalatendu Sahu, after getting information of the incident, visited Reddy's family to probe on the case. District BJP Krushak Morcha activists also reached Reddy's house and paid their condolences besides demanding compensation from the government for his family.

Talking to media persons Sahu said, "We came for an enquiry after getting the information about Reddy's death and are interrogating the villagers about the facts. We saw that the medical condition of his son is also very poor. Further details to find out any more issues relating to the death are also checked by us."
