Nabarangpur: A pregnant woman was carried on shoulders for three kilometres as 108 ambulance failed to show up even after repeated calls at Rampara village in Nabarangpur district on Monday.

As per reports, family members of Damani Gond had called for 108 and 102 ambulance after she complained of labour pain. But as the vehicles did not arrive, she was carried by them for nearly three kilometres and then taken to Umerkote Community Health Centre (CHC) by booking a private vehicle.

"We dialled for 108 ambulance as she suffered from labour pain, but they said they are busy and cannot come so we carried her on our shoulders," said a relative of Damani, Dasrath Gond.

Damani gave birth to a baby boy in the CHC. The condition of both mother and son was said to be safe.

Gynaecology and Obstetrics (O&G) specialist Doctor Sumant Kumar Raul said, "She was suffering from labour pain when she arrived and we delivered the baby within half an hour. A male child was born and both mother and son are healthy."

Raul however said he is unaware about the means of transportation Damani and her family members took to reach the hospital.
