Pipili: Two persons were detained and a huge cache of explosive materials used in cracker making were seized by police in Jeypore Sasan village in Pipili last night.

Following a directive from Puri SP Sarthak Sadangi, local police officials raided a house and seized crackers and explosives worth Rs 10 lakh.

The detainees have been identified as Santosh Sahu and Swahin Sahu.

Recent deaths in Pipili area due to cracker explosion have reportedly made the police jittery.

Though two cracker units have been granted licence in Pipili by the fire department, sources said more than 20 cracker manufacturing units are operating in Pipili.

On October 18, a minor girl was killed while four others were injured critically in an explosion while making crackers at Bilipada near Pipili.

The minor girl was identified as Prajnarani Behera. The injured Amit Behera, Sidhhant Behera, Tulu Behera and Reshma Behera were admitted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar and later shifted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.

In a similar kind of mishap in Bahabalpur of Balasore, 11 persons were killed in a cracker unit explosion on October 18.

Sources said in view of the recent mishaps, DGP RP Sharma has issued directive to district SPs to crackdown on illegal cracker manufacturing units operating without a valid licence.
