Cuttack: Not only in remote areas but the plight of expectant mothers seems to be same in urban areas of Odisha. Such a shocking case was reported from the Millenium City today where a woman gave birth on the verandah of City Hospital in Cuttack.

According to sources, the woman, a resident of Dagarpada, had arrived at the hospital in a critical state after suffering labour pain. But the doctor in the hospital had demanded money for admitting her, failing which she was asked to return. At last the woman delivered on the hospital verandah.

Talking to OTV, sister-in-law of the woman said, “We had arrived at 7.30 am for test when the doctor asked us to perform ultrasound and asked Rs 1000 for it. I came with the money and performed the ultrasound after which the doctor told us to go to SCB Medical as it is a case of cesarean delivery. In the meantime, my sister-in-law had already delivered the baby. I called the doctor to see her but she demanded Rs 1000 for it. My sister-in-law was suffering on the hospital verandah for one hour after which a nurse came and took her inside.”

While the hospital authorities are silent on the incident, Cuttack CDMO has said he will conduct a probe on it.
