Engineering student kidnapping case: Prime accused nabbed

Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate Police on Saturday arrested Debasish Mukherjee believed to be the mastermind in the kidnapping of a B.Tech student from Jagamara in Bhubaneswar on October 2.

Earlier, six persons including two students were arrested in connection with the kidnapping of engineering student Anuj Jha for a ransom of Rs 10 lakh.

According to reports, Debasish was intercepted while he was frequently changing his location between Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

Senior officials claim that Debasish’s wife, who is also one of the key accused in connection with the kidnapping, is still absconding.

Both Debasish and his wife had played a crucial role in the abduction of Anuj Jha, a resident of Dhanbad in Jharkhand.

Meanwhile, Debasish will be interrogated to ascertain if the motive behind the kidnapping was for extorting money and who else was involved in the conspiracy and execution of the crime.

DCP Satyabrat Bhoi informed that Debasish had some dispute with Anuj over money and he is now being interrogated.

“Preliminary probe reveals that the kidnapping was over some financial dispute and only after interrogation of Debasish is completed, the truth will be known,” said Bhoi.
